Our Mission

KVS has a four fold mission viz:-

  • To cater to the educational needs of children of transferable Central Government employees including Defence and Para-military personnel by providing a common programme of education.
  • To pursue excellence and set the pace in the field of school education.
  • To initiate and promote experimentations and innovations in education in collaboration with other bodies like CBSE, NCERT, etc.
  • To develop the spirit of national integration and create a sense of “Indianness” among children.

    The genesis of the K.V

    Our Vidyalaya was started in the year 1981 and now it is one of the best among 14 Vidyalayas in Chennai District, Tamil Nadu State. This Vidyalaya comes under Defence Sector in KVS Chennai Region which has 53 schools under it in Kerala, TN and Pondicherry. KV Island Grounds is located very close to Chennai central railway station, on Body guard road now known as Pallavan Salai, very near to Body Guard Muneeshwarar Temple. Housed in a sprawling 6.6 Acres of Army land, among lush green trees, surrounded by beautiful aesthetically laid out garden, the Vidyalaya has a huge building,. The building sets glamour for the concept of cleanliness and facilities.

    Important milestones of growth:

    KV, Island Grounds, at present has around 2000 students & 78 staff. Five sections each in I Std. to IX Std., four sections in X Std. From the academic year 2009-10 in class XI one more science section and new FMM section has been started. Our school now has 3 sections in class XI( 2 science & 1 FMM) and 1 section in class XII(science). Children of Defence staff, CISF, Coast Guard, Banks, Railways and small number of Local population are studying in this school. Children of all states, communities & cadre sit together in oneness forgetting all differences. With recently added ten rooms, the Vidyalaya has eight Laboratories including computer, Mathematics labs, spacious computerized library with e-library facility, spacious auditorium to accommodate 800 pupil, two halls for Co-Curricular activities, Dining Hall, Guest Room, 49 Class – rooms well furnished, separate halls for yoga, music, art, craft (SUPW) and indoor games. The Vidyalaya has the best facility for promoting sports and games, a volley ball court, Kho-Kho, Basket ball, Kabaddi, High jump, Running practice tracks and play field for kids. Our Computer labs have internet facility with broad-band, multimedia projectors, TV, VCR, OHP and huge collection of CDs on all subjects and lessons for Classes I to XII. All teachers and office staff are well trained to use computers for their field of work. We provide facilities for learning classical dances, music, band and drums, art and handicrafts, special coaching in sports, taking services of experts in the fields. Ours is a man - making institution, with well planned scheme for Co-Curricular Activities and Scouts and Guides. Through club activities we provide opportunities to the children for the all round development. We have nature club, literary clubs in Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Maths, Science club, Photography and Arts club. We arrange Guidance and Counselling services through guest lectures, yoga (regular) classes (we have well trained permanent staff), out door trips etc. Our students regularly take part in all competitions conducted by other private schools like inter school solo and group songs, dances, drawing, quiz, essay writing, karate and so on, and win many prizes. Apart from these activities, we have inter KVS competitions which take the selected students to sub-regional, regional and national level competitions. Corporal punishments and private tuition by KV teachers are banned in all Kendriya Vidyalayas. It is compulsory for all KV staff to undergo periodical in-service training programmes to keep themselves abreast with latest trends and techniques in teaching practices.

    Examinations

    Kendriya Vidyalaya Island Grounds prepares students for examinations such as National Maths Olympiad, National Talent search examinations and other such examinations conducted by private agencies.

    Safety for children

    1. Children entering the vidyalaya campus and their exit are regulated by road safety petrol (RSP), a group of student volunteers from higher classes and the school watchman and security guard. 2. No child is allowed to go out of the school campus without the Principal’s permission. Every person entering the school has to register in the record book provided with the security guard. 3. Reverse osmosis water purification has been installed to provide safe drinking water. 4. Fire extinguishers are provided in all laboratories, library, computer rooms, corridors and mock fire control drill, fire control management are rehearsed often. 5. Twice a year medical check up is done by qualified trained doctors and reports are sent to each parent for follow up. 6. In the event of a child falling sick or getting injured, trained staff provide first aid and with an escort the child is taken to the hospital. In case the parent is not in a position to come to pick up the child, our train staff drop the child at home, taking auto/taxi. 7. Regular instructions are given in the morning assembly regarding safety.

    Activities at school

    1. School provides computer education to private neighbouring schools – children as a part of neighbourhood school adopting scheme. 2. School is the center for teacher – related programmes such as workshop, In-service Training Courses, Summer Courses Regional level exhibitions etc. Because of its beautiful location and excellent infrastructure facility school’s library is the best in the region with all latest books, and e-library. 3. This is the only school with school band, a group of boys and girls trained to play band, bugles, trumpets for all occasions. 4. School extends facility and place to conduct Departmental Promotion examinations for the Army, MES, entrance examinations (of all India level) of various universities and colleges. 5. Under ‘Education through Newspaper’ Scheme students get daily news paper THE HINDU a National paper at affordable price of Re One. We have a readership of the paper around 700 per day.

    All the students of our Vidyalaya are divided into four houses namely Amethyst, Emerald, Ruby and Sapphire to give them an open and fair chance to display their sporting talents. Our vidyalya have two Kabaddi Court, one Basketball Court, one Volleyball Court, a Kho-Kho Court and a multipurpose ground. Events are conducted division wise as per their age groups. Annual Sports Day is conducted every year and all the winners are given the prizes and cerfificates. All the sports and games activities are conducted to inculcate healthy competitive spirit, sportsmanship as well as discipline and self control in the students. Students are trained to represent in KVS National Meet. The selection procedure to participate in National level is that a Vidyalaya team should win the sub – regional level and get selected at Regional Level comprising of all KVs in Chennai Region. Individual events, athletes from the region will be sent for national meet where all the Kendriya Vidyalays throughout the country will participate.
